ABORTION OPPONENTS PLEDGE GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN FOR CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, JUNE 29, 2017....A Beacon Hill lawmaker and his allies launched a ballot initiative campaign Thursday, offering a proposal that would shift decisions around taxpayer funding for abortions away from the state constitution and into the hands of the Legislature. Jim Lyons hopes to place a constitutional amendment on the 2020 ballot that would overturn a 1981 Supreme Judicial Court ruling that says the state must fund abortions.

GUN BILL HEARING FOCUSES ON RISK ORDER, SUPPRESSOR PROPOSALS
STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, JULY 19, 2017....Firearms legislation took center stage at a hearing Tuesday where advocates for new gun laws and their opponents clashed over a bill that would allow guns to be temporarily seized from people deemed at high risk of hurting themselves or others. David Linsky filed the legislation (H 3081), which would add Massachusetts to a handful of states that allow firearms to be seized by a court-issued civil order at the request of families, law enforcement officers or some health care providers.

The party’s over: University takes disciplinary action against two popular fraternities
On any given Friday night, hundreds of University of Massachusetts students crowd into the backyards and basements of Theta Chi and Phi Sigma Kappa, and many others mill around the yard behind the fraternities, waiting to get in. Bass beats bump and the crowd buzzes. The fraternities are a draw for first-year students, in part because they are easy to get to; the houses are located at the edge of campus, across from the Studio Arts Building on North Pleasant Street, an easy walk from the dorms.

Former Clarke School staff, alumni seize mementos from beloved Galbraith Center

New arrests total 19 Wednesday night as Divest UMass protest continues
A sit-in demanding the University of Massachusetts divest from fossil fuels that swelled to some 250 participants by late Wednesday afternoon ended with the arrests of 19 students who did not leave the building by a 6 p.m. deadline. It was the second straight night of arrests at the Whitmore Administration Building after 15 protesters were arrested Tuesday.
